Pacific Rim: Uprising Gets its First Trailer

 

The first trailer has been released for the upcoming sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's Mecha vs Kaiju romp Pacific Rim (2013). Del Toro is a producer this time around with Steven S. Deknight (known mostly for TV work) taking over director duties. John Boyega (The Force Awakens) has been plugged into the role previously filled by Charlie Hunham as Jake Pentecost, son of the much better named Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba). Rinko Kikuchi is also allegedly reprising her role as Mako Mori, though I struggled to spot her in the trailer. Check it out...

There are many warning signs with this one, namely many of the people involved with the original have abandoned ship with imdb listing no less than four writers involved in the screenplay. Also, a director who's primary directing credit is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff does not fill me with confidence. We'll have to see how this one pans out, but I had hopes that Pacific Rim would branch off into a successful franchise like the Godzilla/Kong monsterverse. Let's hope this isn't a cash grab sequel.

Leatherface gets a red band trailer

 

A new red band trailer has dropped for the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel "Leatherface". Covering the early teenage years, the film follows the young Thomas Sawyer as he escapes from a mental hospital and goes on a state wide rampage, pursued by Stephen Dorff's Texas ranger. check it out...

I'm no fan of over explaining the origins of one of horror's great icons, and this has more than a whiff of Rob Zombie's dreadful Halloween remake. Plus, the Texas Chainsaw has had an extraordinarily bad run of sequels, arguably only the first sequel measured up to the brilliance of the original. 

However, the movie is being directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, the pairing that brought you Inside (2007), Livid (2011) and the Texas Chainsaw-esque Among the Living (2014). This is sure to guarantee excessive levels of violence if nothing else! We'll find out when the movie is released in October

Flatliners remake gets a trailer

 

The upcoming remake of Joel Schumacher's Flatliners has released it's first trailer. The 1990 supernatural thriller helped to turn Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon and Kiefer Sutherland into huge 90s movie stars and has now received a modern update. Seemingly following the same plot as the original, the film follows a group of young medical students as they experiment with pushing themselves to the brink of death, and beyond.

With a much more underwhelming cast in the form of Ellen Paige, Nina Dobrev and Diego Luna, although Sutherland is also credited, the film would appear to be scraping the very bottom of the barrel when it comes to unnecessary remakes. However, the aesthetics are at least a change from the grungy, gritty original and, you would assume, there will be some incorporation of new scientific ideas that have emerged since the early 90s. The film is released this September.

New Blade Runner trailer

A full trailer has been released for the upcoming Blade Runner 2049. As well as giving an action packed look at the visually jaw dropping world, the trailer gives us a better look at the characters being played by Ryan Gosling, Ana De Armas and, most intriguingly, Jared Leto. Leto appears to take on a creator character (similar to Eldon Tyrell in the original) as we're given a glimpse into how replicants are made for the first time. check out the trailer...

As well as hearing the familiar strains of Vangelis' iconic score, you can see Harrison Ford reprising the role of Deckard and passing the torch to Ryan Gosling's mysterious "Officer K". The burning question on my mind, however, is Officer K a human or a replicant? We'll find out in October

New WFTPOTA trailer

A 2nd trailer has been released for the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes. Whilst not quite nailing the brevity and impact of the first trailer, this does seem to shed more light on Caeser's motivations against the human militia and, interestingly, indicates some of the Apes have turned traitor and joined up with the humans. Woody Harrelson also gets some cracking dialogue as the Colonel Kurtz-esque character including “Sometimes it is necessary to abandon our humanity, to save our humanity”. Check it out...

This also promises to be the most action packed instalment of the rebooted franchise, after Rise (2011) and Dawn (2014) so skilfully set the scene. This is my favourite franchise of the decade and I can't wait to see the full scale wintery warfare promised in this trailer. War for the Planet of the Apes will (ironically) be released in July.

IT gets first trailer

The first trailer has been released for the upcoming remake/adaptation of Stephen King's IT. The creepiness factor is definitely strong with this one and I was impressed by how much they held back, showing very little of Bill Skarsgard's Pennywise. check it out...

Although I'm not completely sold on this interpretation of Pennywise, it was always going to be difficult to replicate the sheer terror of Tim Curry's iconic performance, everything is looking good here and they've certainly nailed that classic King atmosphere. We'll have to wait til September to be traumatised by Pennywise all over again.

"To the Covenant!" online prologue for new Alien film

A short prologue has been released for the upcoming Alien: Covenant. Clocking in at just 4 minutes, the clip introduces you to the new crew and even throws in a clever nod to the original Alien movie. Presumably this won't be included in the theatrical cut, but is a really nice way to introduce the new cast members and establishes a tone that can seemingly shift from jovial to terrifying in a split second. Also, interesting is the various tension between crew members, particularly James Franco's character and his subordinates. We''l have to wait until the 19th of May to find out more.

The Void gets a new trailer

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming Astron 6 project The Void. From the team that brought you Father's Day (2011), the film has been gathering quite a bit of steam as comparisons to John Carpenter classics like The Thing have begun to rack up. The trailer foregoes setting up any plot and instead opts for a sequence of glimpses into the Lovecraftian horrors that dwell within the hospital which the film is set in. Check it out.

It's quite refreshing to have a trailer which doesn't reel off the whole plot but, like a comedy, if all your best bits are in the trailer it could make for a disappointing watch. It also seems to take on a more serious tone than the usual Astron 6 fare, which is good. The film will be released on the 31st March in the UK.

Chucky returns!

Details are emerging on a brand new film in the Chucky franchise, following the surprisingly good Curse of Chucky in 2013. Fiona Douriff will be reprising her role as Nica Pierce, a paraplegic committed to an insane asylum following the events of the last film. Brad Douriff will of course be voicing Chucky once again with the characters of Andy Barclay and Tiffany also returning.

I've always been a fan of the Child's Play/Chucky franchise and it has remained surprisingly consistent over the years. However, it sounds like Don Mancini (writer) is throwing a lot at the wall for the 7th installment, with a lot of returning characters. That being said, he also threw a lot at the wall with Seed of Chucky (2004) and that was a riot. Add to that that he was also able to steer the franchise back from the brink of meta insanity with Curse and I pretty much trust Mancini completely. A sizzle reel has been released to remind you of who Chucky is, as if you could forget!

Rings gets a 2nd trailer

After being delayed for the third time last November, Paramount are once again threatening to release their belated threequel to the American Ring series. This time scheduled for a February 3rd release, a new trailer has been released to kickstart the marketing campaign once again.

Thankfully much shorter and less revealing than the overstuffed trailer from last year, we get a neat montage of scares set to a creepy nursery rhyme to set the tone for Samara's return. Obviously, the fact that the movie has been repeatedly delayed is not a good sign, but perhaps we will be able to see for ourselves when February 3rd rolls around.

Blade Runner 2049: first trailer

A trailer has been released this week for the upcoming belated sequel, Blade Runner 2049. Although in development for a long time, the details and images have been scarce (which isn't like Ridley Scott). But now, we get a full look at the continued universe first created in the 1982 classic and it certainly doesn't disappoint on an aesthetic level.

The atmospheric trailer also confirms what many had suspected in that Harrison ford is handing over the Deckard role to Ryan Gosling, in all but name. It was always clear that Denis Villeneuve had the visual chops to recreate the neo-noir future of blade runner, we will have to wait until next October to find out if the story can also hold up to the high concept, existential watermark of the original.

War for the Planet of the Apes trailer

 

The first full trailer has just dropped for the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes and, to no ones surprise, it's absolutely stunning. Director Matt Reeves has been hard at work for many months in the Canadian wilderness with a cast including the returning Andy Serkis as well as Woody Harrelson. After 2 incredibly high concept installments, the franchise appears to be reaching new heights in terms of scale. Check it out...

 

And what about that bombastic score? We'll have to wait until next July to see Caesar and his Ape army make their last stand against "the Colonel's" forces but anticipateion is extremely high for what will hopefully make for a flawless trilogy.

Kong: Skull Island gets new trailer and posters

It's been a big week for the upcoming Kong: Skull island as the film has received 2 new posters as well as a full length trailer. As you can see, one poster seems to opt for the classic Apocalypse Now sunset look, giving a sense of scale to Kong, whereas the other focuses on revealing the big ape in all his glory. 

The trailer, however, seems to mark quite a shift in tone from the comic con teaser earlier this year and comes across as more playful and fun (the less said about John C Reilly's Dennis Hopper impression, the better). It also shows us that, true to the original, Kong is a morally ambivalent character that protects the island from other creatures, including the fascinating new "Skullcrawlers". 

Much like Godzilla 2014, it's good to see them introducing new antagonists for Kong to fight rather than go back to the tired dinosaur battle that we've seen time and time again. Although, there's every reason to believe the king will have smushed a few humans too by the tie it's all said and done. Kong: Skull Island comes out March 2017. Check out the trailer...

Trailer for creature feature "Gremlin"

A trailer has been released for upcoming monster flick "Gremlin". Directed by Ryan Bellgardt (Army of Frankenstein), the film follows a mysterious box which holds a terrible secret...a tiny monster! The only way to get rid of the box is by giving it to someone you love, thus passing on the curse. Check out the trailer...

Obviously there are a lot of different influences going on here. From Hellraiser and The Ring, to Cloverfield and Godzilla and the special effects look fantastic. The film will be released independently over the coming months.

War for the Planet of the Apes gets first teaser trailer

A brief, but very exciting, teaser trailer has been released for the upcoming third entry in the acclaimed rebooted series. A visibly aged and weary Caesar (Andy Serkis) declares that "War has already begun!", which seems to be reflective of the older, darker character Matt Reeves and Andy Serkis have been pitching.

We'll have to wait until July of next year to learn the exact scale of the War and the fate of Caesar, a character which has been masterfully crafted by Serkis over the last two films. Combine this with the upcoming Skull Island, and we're in for a very Apey 2017 indeed!

Turbo Kid Returns!

Great news for fans of last years post apocalyptic romp Turbo Kid, as not only has a sequel been greenlit, but a prequel music video has been released to tide us all over. The sequel will directly follow the events of the first film, in which "the Kid" befriends loveable android Apple in a quest to overthrow evil warlord Zeus.

The music video, however, follows the Apple's adventures before the events of the first film and another unlikely friendship (all set to French style electro-pop, naturally). Check out the video and expect Turbo Kid 2 in the near future..

Full Death House trailer

 

A full red band trailer has emerged for upcoming horror ensemble Death House. Styling itself as "the Expendables of horror", the movies features an all star cast of horror legends such as Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, Barbara Crampton, Sid Haig and many more. The trailer features all the cheesy mayhem you would expect as well as some great lines such as "some are dosed with JUST lsd" and "I will fuck you in hell". The film is released next year, check out the trailer...

Ben Wheatley returns with Free Fire trailer

A trailer has emerged for the next Ben Wheatley film, the dark crime caper Free Fire. After this years fantastic High Rise, Wheatley will return to direct a great cast in the form of Cillian Murphy, Brie Larsson, Sharlto Copley and, of course, Michael Smiley.

Wheatley is my favourite director in the country right now and he gets better and better with every movie. This one also appears to be a return to the comedic gangster style of his first feature Down Terrace (2009). Release is March 2017, check out the trailer...

Rings gets a new poster and trailer

The upcoming Ring reboot has received a brand new poster and a rather revealing trailer. Scheduled for a Halloween release, the film is directed by F. Javier Gutierezz and will update the ring franchise for the internet generation.

I'm quietly excited for this as The Ring is one of the greatest remakes ever made, however, The Ring 2 severely damaged the franchise so there will be a lot of making up to do. Also Kayako vs Sadako has been released in Japan and will be making it's way west later this year, which could overexpose the franchise. Check out the trailer but, be warned, it reveals an awful lot about the film:

Teaser for "final" Resident Evil movie

A teaser trailer has been released for the forthcoming Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The entry promises to be the last in the long running franchise (we've all heard that before) as married couple Paul W.S Anderson and Milla Jovavich return for the swansong.

Like it's slow moving, deteriating antagonists, the Resident Evil movie franchise has gone on far too long and has mirrored the similar decline in quality that has plagued the game franchise. The trailer doesn't seem to suggest any reason for one last movie but does feature jovavich high kicking her way through raccoon city to a guns n roses soundtrack, wrapping up the franchise in suitably cheesy fashion.
